As part of our process of knowledge exchange and capacity building, we took this trip to the heart of the Amazon forest with our local awardee, the IMA, to meet and support a group from their network: the Association of the Traditional Midwives of the Forest of Marechal Thaumaturgo – Maria Esperança. They were gathering at the occasion of the International Day of the Midwives on 5th May, and took this opportunity to revive the association and press their claims to the local authorities.
The association exists since 1994, and is currently composed of 66 midwives, all women, aged between 40 and 80 years-old, and many of them are part of indigenous ethnicities from the region. They all live in the municipality, but the local geography of a town built around rivers means that some of them have to travel long distances by canoe to reach the city-centre. They perform the work of midwifery without having any formal qualifications or the due recognition from local authorities, even though they do a literally vital task for the community. Midwifery is an ancestral knowledge, passed through generations, from mothers to daughters, grand-mothers to grand-daughters, and according to them, one does not choose this occupation but rather is “called” to duty and “chosen by” the work.
Some of these women started working as young as 12 years old, and they have delivered hundreds, or in some cases, even thousands of babies throughout their lives! In addition, they know healing properties of local plants and traditional medicine, and represent a pillar for the social – and reproductive – life of their community. Their service is more than needed in this remote area of the Amazon, where hospitals are hard to access and doctors are often unavailable to attend pregnant women at their homes. The babies born to their hands can be declared at the civil registry, meaning that their work is implicitly recognised and forms part of the local health and administrative system.
However, in the absence of a formal qualification, these traditional midwives work without a salary, sometimes having to pay from their own pocket the fuel for the canoe (the local mode of transportation) and clinical equipment. Everyone relies on them, yet, it has been normalized that they do this work on a voluntary basis. As the midwives say: “all we receive is a thank you from the mother who gave birth”. Besides, they are highly exposed to occupational hazards, such as snake bites when they walk long distance at night, adverse climate conditions, either when it is the raining season or under the scorching sun, as well as the risks inherent to delivering babies. They sometimes have to stay for days at the home of the pregnant woman, leaving their own family behind to care of another family. Nazaré Nogueira Maia, the current president of the association, explains that they are responsible for 2 lives, the one of the mother and the one of the baby to be, and feels that they are invested of a sacred mission. Thus, even without the adequate resources or equipment, they give their absolute best to bring babies to life, or, as they say, to “catch kids” (pegar meninos).
Few years ago, the association Maria Esperança used to have a room rented by the municipality which they could use as their office. According to Nazaré, this space is of the outmost importance in order to enable the midwives to run the association, do their admin work and receive the mothers for advice and guidance. Having an office further makes them more visible and easier to reach by the local population. She confirmed that they also used to receive a “Midwife Kit” from the Federal Government, a measure approved under the presidency of Dilma Rousseff in 2011, containing sterilising material, gloves, weighting machines, among other basic and fundamental equipment that guarantee their safety at work. However, they have not been receiving this kit for years. Their headquarters were also removed some time ago, after changes in the local administration. What is more, in 2013, the state of Acre approved a legislation to provide midwives with a financial support of 250 Brazilian reais per month (approx. 40 GBP), but this law was never implemented.
Thus, on this week of commemoration, the traditional midwives from Marechal Thaumaturgo came back together after 2 years of pandemic crisis, and pressed their claims to the local authorities. At the municipal level, they are asking to get their office back. At the state level, they want that the law providing financial support be implemented and increased to 600 reais (100 GBP), and finally, at the federal level, they demand that the Health Department reinstates the “Midwife Kit”. We had the honour and privilege to attend two significant events with them and support their claims.
First, on 4th May, we accompanied the board of directors of the association to the local council, where they had an open audience with Valdelio José Furtado, the current Mayor, and Fatima Cruz, Secretary of Social Work. The midwives made their case and handed over a letter to the Mayor, asking for their office space back. After a round of discussions between the midwives, the representative of the IMA, Concita Maia, and local authorities, we both made a statement in support of their demands and praised their precious skills and knowledge. Louisa reminded with admiration that their level of knowledge and expertise is of a higher education level, while Nadia explained that her two sons were brought to life by a midwife in London, highlighting the importance of the special connexion that exists between the new born and the midwife. The Mayor then also shared a personal memory about his relationship with his midwife, and publicly committed to “embrace” their struggle and to find a space where they could restart an office.

Secondly, on 5th May, we took part of their event in commemoration of the International Day of the Midwifes, and were able to announce that GRRIPP will finance the administrative and legal fees required to make their association recognised at the civil registry. This will enable them to apply for funding and strengthen their organisational capacities. The good news was shared together with Concita and Nazaré, and received with great emotions by the assembly of midwives attending the event. Through this funding, the association will be able to grow and build solid grounds for their work. We both felt very grateful and privileged to be sharing this moment with them, and would like to thank the whole GRRIPP team and UKRI for making this work possible. We look forward to developing further our partnership with them and hope that we can do more to support their struggle for recognition and dignity!

GRRIPP apoia as parteiras da Amazônia
As integrantes da equipe do GRRIPP-UCL, Nadia Jackson (Gerente de Due Diligence e Finanças) e Louisa Acciari (Coordenadora Global de Redes), visitaram nosso parceiro, o Instituto Mulheres da Amazônia (IMA), no município de Marechal Thaumaturgo, no estado do Acre, Brasil, de 3 a 5 de maio de 2022. Como parte de nosso processo de troca de conhecimento e qualificação, fizemos esta viagem ao coração da floresta amazônica com nosso parceiro local, o IMA, para conhecer e apoiar um grupo de sua rede: a Associação das Parteiras Tradicionais da Floresta do Marechal Thaumaturgo – Maria Esperança. Estavam reunidas por ocasião do Dia Internacional das Parteiras, dia 5 de maio, e aproveitaram esta oportunidade para reorganizar a associação e apresentar as suas reivindicações junto às autoridades locais.
A associação existe desde 1994, e atualmente é composta por 66 parteiras, todas mulheres, com idades entre 40 e 80 anos, muitas delas pertencentes a etnias indígenas da região. Todos elas vivem no município, mas a geografia local de uma cidade construída em torno dos rios faz com que a maioria delas tenha que percorrer longas distâncias de canoa para chegar ao centro da cidade. Essas mulheres exercem o trabalho de parteira sem nenhuma qualificação formal nem o devido reconhecimento das autoridades locais, embora desempenhem uma tarefa literalmente vital para a comunidade. A prática de partejar é um saber ancestral, passado de gerações em gerações, de mães para filhas, de avós para netas. Segundo elas, não se escolhe esta profissão, é o trabalho que “chama” elas.
Algumas dessas mulheres começaram a trabalhar como parteiras aos 12 anos de idade e deram à luz centenas ou, em alguns casos, até milhares de bebês ao longo de suas vidas! Além disso, elas conhecem as propriedades curativas das plantas locais e da medicina tradicional, e representam um pilar para a vida social – e reprodutiva – de sua comunidade. Seu serviço é mais do que necessário nesta área remota da Amazônia, onde os hospitais são de difícil acesso e os médicos raramente estão disponíveis para atender as mulheres grávidas em suas casas. Os bebês nascidos das mãos das parteiras podem ser declarados no cartório, o que significa que seu trabalho é implicitamente reconhecido e faz parte do sistema de saúde e administrativo local.
No entanto, na ausência de uma qualificação formal, essas parteiras tradicionais trabalham sem remuneração, às vezes tendo que pagar do próprio bolso o combustível da canoa (modo de transporte local) e equipamentos clínicos. Todos contam com elas, mas foi normalizado que elas façam esse trabalho de forma voluntária. Como dizem as parteiras: “só recebemos um agradecimento da mãe que deu à luz”. Além disso, estão altamente expostas a riscos ocupacionais, como picadas de cobras quando caminham longas distâncias à noite dentro da floresta, condições climáticas adversas na época das chuvas, ou o sol escaldante, além dos riscos inerentes ao trabalho de partejar. Às vezes têm que ficar dias na casa da gestante, deixando sua própria família para cuidar da família dos outros. Nazaré Nogueira Maia, a atual presidente da associação, explica que elas são responsáveis por duas vidas, a da mãe e a do bebê, e sentem-se investidas de uma missão sagrada. Assim, mesmo sem os recursos ou equipamentos adequados, elas dão o seu melhor para dar vida aos bebês, ou, segundo suas palavras, “pegar meninos”.
Há poucos anos, a Associação Maria Esperança tinha uma sala alugada pela prefeitura que era utilizada como escritório. Segundo Nazaré, este espaço é da maior importância para que as parteiras possam organizar a associação, fazer o seu trabalho administrativo e receber as mães para aconselhamento e orientação. Ter um escritório ainda as torna mais visíveis e mais fáceis de acesso pela população local. Ela confirmou que elas também costumavam receber o “Kit Parteira” do Governo Federal brasileiro, uma medida aprovada durante a presidência da Dilma Rousseff em 2011, contendo material esterilizante, luvas, balança de pesagem do bebê, dentre outros instrumentos básicos e fundamentais que garantem a segurança do trabalho desenvolvidos por elas. Entretanto, há anos que não recebem o referido kit. A sede também foi retirada há algum tempo, após mudanças na administração local. Além disso, em 2013, o estado do Acre aprovou uma legislação para fornecer às parteiras um apoio financeiro de 250 reais por mês (aprox. 40 GBP), mas essa lei nunca foi implementada.
Assim, nesta semana de comemoração, as parteiras tradicionais de Marechal Thaumaturgo voltaram a se reunir após 2 anos de crise pandêmica, e apresentaram suas reivindicações junto às autoridades locais. No nível municipal, elas estão pedindo para recuperar seu escritório. No nível estadual, querem que a lei do auxílio Bolsa Parteira seja implementada e aumentada para 600 reais (100 GBP), e, por fim, no nível federal, elas exigem que o Ministério da Saúde restitua o “Kit Parteira”. Tivemos a honra e o privilégio de participar de dois eventos significativos com elas e apoiar suas reivindicações.
Primeiramente, no dia 4 de maio, acompanhamos a diretoria da associação, juntamente com o IMA, à Câmara Municipal, onde tiveram uma audiência aberta com Valdelio José Furtado, atual prefeito, e Fátima Cruz, Secretária de Serviço Social. As parteiras apresentaram sua pauta e entregaram uma carta ao prefeito, pedindo seu espaço de volta. Após uma rodada de discussões entre as parteiras, a representante do IMA, Concita Maia, e as autoridades locais, ambas fizemos uma declaração de apoio à suas demandas e elogiamos suas preciosas habilidades e conhecimentos. Louisa lembrou com admiração que o nível de conhecimento e especialização das parteiras é de nível superior, enquanto Nádia explicou que seus dois filhos foram trazidos à vida por uma parteira em Londres, destacando a importância da conexão especial que existe entre o recém-nascido e a parteira. O prefeito também compartilhou uma memória pessoal sobre seu relacionamento com sua parteira, e se comprometeu publicamente a “abraçar” a causa e encontrar um espaço onde pudessem reiniciar um escritório.
Em segundo lugar, no dia 5 de maio, participamos do evento comemorativo do Dia Internacional das Parteiras, e pudemos anunciar que o GRRIPP vai financiar as despesas administrativas e legais necessárias para que a associação das parteiras possa regularizar sua situação no cartório. Isto lhes permitiria receber financiamentos e reforçar suas capacidades organizacionais. A boa notícia foi anunciada junto com a Concita e a Nazaré, e recebida com grande emoção pela assembleia de parteiras presentes no evento. Através deste financiamento, a associação poderá crescer e construir bases sólidas para o seu trabalho. Nós duas nos sentimos muito gratas e privilegiadas por compartilhar este momento com elas, e gostaríamos de agradecer toda a equipe GRRIPP e o UKRI por tornar este trabalho possível. Estamos ansiosas para aprofundar nossa parceria com elas e esperamos poder fazer mais para apoiar sua luta por reconhecimento e dignidade!
