Mariapía Garaycochea writes about the exciting news that Paola Jirón, GRRIPP regional advisor, has been appointed President of the National Council for Territorial Development in Chile
From GRRIPP Latin America and the Caribbean, we would like to highlight and congratulate Paola Jirón, regional advisor, on her appointment as President of the newly created National Council for Territorial Development (CNDT).
The function of this entity is to advise the President of the Republic of Chile on the implementation of national urban and rural development policies such as the National Urban Development Policy (PNDU), the National Rural Development Policy (PNDR) and the National Land Use Planning Policy (PNOT).
As announced by the President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, the CNDT "will have as its challenge to promote planning that addresses the particularities of each zone, to contribute to the decentralisation of the country and to open instances of dialogue to develop proposals that address territorial conflicts" (CNDU: 2022).
In her introductory remarks, Paola Jirón highlighted that "its main guidelines during this first administration will be territorial planning with a climate change perspective, living in risk areas, citizen security, irregular settlements, citizen linkages, parcels and gender" (CNDU: 2023). It also emphasised the need to establish an integrated approach to territorial planning that takes an intersectional and interdisciplinary approach (Paola Jirón in CNDU, 2023).
